Maria, I was saying my prayers before starting lunch--not making this up--when some upperclassman walking by apparently said hello to me. I didn't respond, since I was occupied with my other Auditor, and he made some scolding remark. I don't remember the exact words, but the idea was that it was un-Christian not to be friendly. I think it was a wisecrack, too. Not exactly setting a good example of childlike innocence.

Luke, p*/n isn't one of the subjects I usually tackle here, and I can only comment on Japan based on living there. But yes, there's a lot of it, on late-night TV, in the manga businessmen read on the train, in vending machines on some side streets, and in the men's magazines you see at every convenience store. The Japanese laws governing exposure are more stringent--you still can't actually show the sex organs, I think--but explicit material intended to be sexually titillating is everywhere.

Speaking of things people like to scold us all about and claim that we're "addicted to" let's talk about porn!

My favorite and only news source Skippystalin has a recent post on American porn consumption with a dollar amount that surprised me. I looked it up and found that there are 3 countries with higher numbers and they are: China, South Korea and Japan.

You and some of your readers are more advanced than I am in the study of the Japanese language and experience living over there. Maybe you can comment on how full of shit or not completely full of shit I am on this.

I find it interesting that we are in the top four with the rest of the world way behind and that our top of the list status is shared by the powerhouse economies of Asia.

I've posted my thoughts on this here.

Sean, ah, yes, the divisive, isolating, wicked Walkman…Did I ever tell you about the time at AC, when soon after I had been in the dining room listening to my Walkman, the campus-wide announcement was made that there was to be no Walkman wearing/listening while in the dining room? The reasoning behind it had to do with the fact that we were supposed to be socializing while at the table, even if it was just a casual meal/day of the week, or if we were just studying there… Frankly, there were times I had wished for my Walkman, especially when overhearing horny sex-starved sophomore/senior couples having a heated discussion under the guise of planning their nuptials. (For most of Sean’s readers: fornication was forbidden). :-P

Eric, I'm sure you remember when the scourge of community, that evil machine that was going to atomize us all, was the Walkman. Well, it's evolved into the iPod, but same difference (unless you have stock in Sony). I generally use mine to block out the dramatically stupid; in cases such as that which you describe, it strikes me as erring on the side of kindness. I'm not good at hiding that I'm sniggering.

Alice, I know. When you've written something like that, it's obviously time for some fresh air.

"The sociologists Christian Licoppe and Jean-Philippe Heurtin have posited that modernity is constantly deinstitutionalizing personal bonds at every level"

Oh well then, that proves it!

Seriously, people should not be discussing cellphones in that kind of language. There are better things to do with one's calories.

Wonderful post, Sean. I have to confess to occasionally getting a certain amount of pleasure in "eavesdropping" on inane "private" conversations. The worse they are, the more entertaining they are. Plus, not knowing what is being said by the other party is exciting. (Hearing "Don't talk to your mother like that!" makes me eager for more...)

I remember one time on a train, a guy was sounding so dramatically stupid that a lot of people were listening avidly while trying not to laugh.

OTOH, maybe the scolds will say it's not right to be amused either.

Thanks, Janis; that was a point I forgot to make. People use cell phones because the benefits over not using cell phones are real. There are trade-offs involved, as there are with all changes; but the benefits outweigh the problems for most people.

Carolyn, I know, right? There certainly are problems created by cell phone use, but having a ready excuse to hand (ahem) for not being available to listen to the person behind you in line at Dunkin Donuts talk about her bunions is NOT one of them.

Miss hanging out with you, too, of course.

What, you mean my life isn't empty and meaningless because I don't chat up every single human being that crosses my path in a given day? I'm so relieved!

(Posts like this remind me how much I've missed your rapier-sharp snark. ^_~)

At one point in my brother's illness, after the "hospice" suggestion from one of the doctors, I was keeping people apprised in five states and two time zones.

Never thought I'd care for a cell phone so much.
