She might have the " appeal", but she doesn't have what it takes to run a country!

Okay, I tried responding to you, Janis, but I got an error message, and the comment was lost. Basically, though, my response was: yes, it bothered me. I'm not sure it was the informality that was the problem--after the Clintons, anything short of a rambunctious slumber party in the Lincoln Bedroom seems like an admirable show of restraint--but the constant diversion of attention to it. Maybe Bristol independently insisted on appearing at her mother's speeches to show support. I don't know. But she and her then-beau certainly looked uncomfortable.

Did Bristol's pregnancy during the campaign bother you?

It did me. I hate to be a prude, but I didn't care for it. I know young people make mistakes, but parents don't usually subject them to a national stage.

I'll repeat, I objected to the way the Bush girls dressed at the convention speech in 2004.

I expect some formality at that level of government.

But she does have appeal, and it's not just sexual. My stepson loved her because she sounded more like "a normal person," he said.

Yeah, that was the sort of thing that worried me, too. It's one thing to point out that a smooth talker isn't necessarily saying anything more substantial than a folksier talker. It's another thing entirely to say that you don't need to know what you're talking about to say something substantial.

She lost me during the debate with Biden when she flatly refused to answer a question and said, paraphrased, "I want to talk about this. Yada, yada, yada ..."

That goes to the point in the Vanity Fair article where she reportedly listened to Halcro talking about numbers, professed amazement at his grasp, then said none of that made a difference to the audience.

She was right, to a point.
